The Rt Hon Sir John Major KG CH attended a dinner in Leeds on Thursday, 5 March, in support of Andrea Jenkyns.
Sir John said: “I am delighted to support Andrea Jenkyns as the next Member of Parliament for Morley & Outwood. Having been born and raised in Yorkshire, Andrea well understands the needs and aspirations of those she seeks to serve at Westminster, and has already demonstrated how hard she is prepared to work to represent the local community. She has an excellent chance of winning the seat in May and will be an able and effective MP – bringing commonsense to the constituency and the House of Commons.”
Sir John reminded those present that the Conservative Party remained the only One-Nation Party in British politics. He told them, “We should follow our better instincts. We shouldn’t define ourselves by what we’re against – but by what we’re for. If we shrink into our core vote, we won’t win elections. We must reach out. We must speak to the Nation, not at them; and always for the Nation – not sectional interests within it.”
Andrea Jenkyns commented, “I am honoured to have the former Prime Minister John Major come up to not only support my campaign but to officially launch it. I have great respect for John as he too came from a working class background and demonstrates that where you from, should not have a bearing on your future. It is the contribution that we individually make in life to better society that is important. I am going to continue to work my heart out for all the people of our area as I have done for the last two years.”
