Some of Morley’s heritage will continue to be on display to the public after a parliamentary candidate stepped in to support. Volunteers at the Morley Heritage Centre were left fearing the worst for a collection of items, which has taken more than 50 years to amass, after being given notice to leave their home on Queen Street. However, they will not have to move far to a temporary home after Conservative parliamentary candidate for Morley & Outwood, Andrea Jenkyns, offered her support. Now, a selection of Morley Heritage Centre’s artefacts are on show at her new office in Queen Street, until a new permanent premises can be found. Ms Jenkyns has also joined the centre’s committee to help them find somewhere new to display items from the town’s rich history and will also call on help from local businesses. “Like many people, I was shocked to find out the Heritage Centre has closed as it is such a fantastic local asset,” Ms Jenkyns said. “However, we have enough space to give a home to some display boards of photos, and space for a couple of display cases as an interim measure.
“I want Morley's rich history to be celebrated and would like to see a heritage centre which is interactive and also educational, and will also increase footfall in the town, which will in turn benefit local businesses.” Morley Heritage Centre founder Peter Aldred said: “I first met Andrea eighteen months ago when she approached me about wanting to help regarding the heritage centre. I know she has a keen interest in history and she attended a few of our meetings. If Andrea hadn’t offered help, then all our history and artefacts would have been and stored in boxes in my home. After spending more than 50 years putting the collection together I hope that soon we will be able to find permanent premises in which to house the photographs and artefacts for everyone to enjoy. “
A meeting to secure support from local businesses for the future of the Heritage Centre will take place on Wednesday, March 11 at Andrea’s office, 62 Queen Street, Morley.
